What is a Leap Year?
A leap year is a year with 366 days instead of the usual 365. This extra day is added to the month of February, which then has 29 days instead of 28.
Leap years are necessary to keep the calendar synchronized with the astronomical year, which is the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun. The astronomical year is not exactly 365 days long, but is actually about 365.242 days. This means that if we didn't have leap years, the calendar would slowly drift out of sync with the seasons.
When is the Next Leap Year?
The next leap year will be in 2024. Leap years occur every four years, so the next one after 2024 will be in 2028.
