Singapore GP Qualifying: Verstappen snatches pole, Ferrari falter

Max Verstappen's Singapore qualifying master class

Max Verstappen put in a scintillating qualifying performance to secure pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver looked imperious throughout the session, topping the timesheets in all three qualifying segments. Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc had little answer to Verstappen's pace, while teammate Sergio Perez could only manage fourth.

Verstappen's pole lap was a staggering 1.494s clear of Leclerc, highlighting the Dutchman's dominance. It also marked his first pole position since the Hungarian Grand Prix, and his seventh of the season.

Ferrari's Singapore struggles continue

Ferrari's woes continued in Singapore qualifying, with both Leclerc and Carlos Sainz failing to match Verstappen's pace. Leclerc, who started the weekend as the favorite, could only manage second, while Sainz was a distant fifth.

Ferrari has struggled in low-speed corners all season, and the Singapore Street Circuit's tight and twisty layout proved to be their undoing. The Italian team will need to find a solution soon if they want to challenge Red Bull for the championship.

Mercedes make progress

Mercedes made some progress in Singapore qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton taking third and George Russell seventh. The Silver Arrows have been off the pace all season, but they showed signs of improvement at Marina Bay.

Hamilton said he was "pleased" with his performance, but admitted that Mercedes still has work to do. "We're not where we want to be yet, but we're making progress," he said.

Other notable performances

  • Kevin Magnussen was an impressive sixth for Haas
  • Sebastian Vettel qualified eighth for Aston Martin
  • Fernando Alonso was ninth for Alpine
  • Nico Hulkenberg was 10th for Aston Martin
