The final results of the 2021 Bundestag Election for Germany as a whole, the Länder, and the individual constituencies are in. Olaf Scholz of Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) has been elected to replace Angela Merkel as Chancellor of Germany.
The SPD won the most seats in the Bundestag, with 206 seats. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) came in second with 197 seats. The Greens came in third with 118 seats, followed by the Free Democratic Party (FDP) with 92 seats, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 83 seats. The Left Party won 39 seats.
Scholz will now begin the process of forming a government. He is expected to form a coalition with the Greens and the FDP. The new government will face a number of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and the war in Ukraine.
